Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has expressed sorrow over the passing of Mrs. Rachel Enagbere, describing her death as a big loss to both the league and the broader football community in Nigeria.
Enagbere was in Lagos serving as the referees assessor for the NPFL Matchday 4 fixture between Ikorodu City and Barau FC when she fell ill. She was rushed to Havanah Hospital in Surulere, where she succumbed to complications stemming from an undisclosed illness.
“The NPFL family is deeply saddened by the unfortunate and unexpected passing of Rachel Enagbere, a former referee who has been an integral part of our team as a match referee assessor,” Elegbeleye stated.
“We extend our sincere condolences to her immediate family and to the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA),” he added.
The NPFL is in discussions with the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), the Lagos Referees Council, and the NRA to ensure that her contributions to the game are recognised and appropriately returned to her family.
