The director general of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has extended his commendations to Babajide Akeredolu, president of the Nigeria Flag Football Federation, for his significant contributions to the growth and success of flag football in Nigeria.

Hon. Olopade’s praise came during a reception held in Abuja in honour of Nigeria’s flag football teams, which achieved a historic victory at the inaugural International Federation of American Football (IFAF) African Flag Football Championship. The tournament took place from June 20 to 21 in Cairo, Egypt, where Nigeria’s teams made a remarkable impact.

Akeredolu was recognised for his substantial financial support, which was crucial for both the men’s and women’s teams’ participation in the championship. His commitment—financial, logistical, and moral—was highlighted by Hon. Olopade, who stated that Akeredolu’s efforts were central to Nigeria’s double-gold achievement in Cairo.

“The time, money, and energy you invested in these teams clearly demonstrate your deep commitment to Nigerian sports,” Hon. Olopade remarked. He further added, “You have brought a new dimension to the development of flag football, and for this, you deserve a national honour. Your contributions align with the vision of the National Sports Commission and the sports development agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The Nigerian men’s team secured gold in a thrilling final, edging out hosts Egypt with a score of 13–12 at the packed Club One Stadium in Maadi, Cairo. The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Ashraf Sobhi.

In the women’s final, Nigeria demonstrated their dominance with a convincing 26–12 victory over Morocco, bolstered by two second-half touchdowns from quarterback Anuoluwapo Bello. This success not only brought home the gold medals but also guaranteed both teams automatic qualification for the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

The championship represents a significant milestone for flag football in Africa and globally, particularly as the sport is set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. Tunisia took home the bronze medal in the men’s category, while Egypt triumphed in the women’s event.

Hon. Olopade concluded by revealing that IFAF had formally acknowledged Akeredolu’s contributions and Nigeria’s outstanding performance through communication with the National Sports Commission via the Presidency.

This recognition highlights the growing prominence of flag football in Nigeria and the continued investment in sports development at all levels.
