NSF 2024: Team Delta Triumphs Over IJA On Penalties To Claim Women’s Football Gold, Host Ogun Secure Men’s Final Victory

In a thrilling contest at the MKO Abiola International Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Team Delta emerged victorious against the Invited Junior Athlete Team (IJA), winning 7-6 on penalties in the Women’s Football Final of the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, known as the Gateway Games, held in Ogunsemilore State yesterday.

The match, which attracted a full-capacity crowd, was a tense affair that concluded in a penalty shootout after both teams remained goalless at 0-0 throughout 120 minutes of play. The atmosphere was electric as the teams battled for supremacy, but it was Team Delta that triumphed, converting their seventh penalty kick to secure the Gold Medal.

Following the match, Bankole Olowookere, coach of the IJA’s Flamingos, commended his players for their performance, highlighting their skill and resilience throughout the encounter. He expressed pride in their efforts, stating that each player met the expectations set for the match, showcasing their professional capabilities.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s final, hosts Team Ogun convincingly defeated Team Kwara 4-1 to claim the gold medal. Supported by a large crowd of enthusiastic fans, the hosts led 3-1 at half-time and sealed their victory by scoring a fourth goal in the 38th minute of the second half.
