NUC Assesses MIVA Varsity For Nursing, Public Health Programmes

A team of the National Universities Commission (NUC) has visited MIVA Open University to assess its facilities and manpower for the take-off of its degree programmes in Nursing and Public Health at the School of Allied Health Sciences in Abuja.

The university disclosed the NUC’s visit in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP in Abuja.

The institution said the visit was to ascertain the level of preparedness for the commencement of the Nursing Science degree and Public Health degree programmes under the university’s School of Allied Health Sciences.

The university said it is part of NUC’s statutory mandate to verify the quality of physical facilities and human resources available for the commencement of new programmes in all Nigerian universities.

In the commission’s team were Prof. Mohammed Ladan, Mr Nasiru Liman and Mr Simon Tertsegha . They were received by senior officials of MIVA Open University led by the vice chancellor, Prof. Oladiran Arulogun, the registrar and director of accreditation, Iheanyi Akwitti, vice president (Operations), Aniekeme Umoh and the director of academic planning, Prof. Jude Chukwu.

In his remarks, Arulogun said MIVA Open University’s focus is on innovative, digital and blended learning models.

He told the NUC officials that the university was NUC-CCMAS compliant in all programmes, adding that it embraced innovative curricula and placed premium on technology, health, management and governance programmes.

In his response, the NUC team’s leader, Ladan said the commission visited to verify the sufficiency of the physical facilities and human resources available for the Nursing Science and Public Health programmes.

The statement revealed that the nursing science/public health laboratories, university clinic, multimedia production studio, learner’s support services unit, guidance and counselling unit, IT facilities, e-library, physical library, lecture halls, and office spaces for academic staff were inspected by the team.

Meanwhile, the university has admitted 532 students into the School of Computing and the School of Management and Social Sciences at its maiden matriculation held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the Podium, Lekki, Lagos.

The university was licenced in May 2023 by NUC to offer academic programmes through an open and distance learning approach.

In his goodwill message, the acting executive secretary of NUC, Mr Chris Maiyaki, appreciated the founder for his visionary and strategic investments in educational services.

The university currently runs BSc. Computer Science, BSc Cybersecurity, BSc Data Science, BSc Software Engineering, BSc Business Management, BSc Economics, BSc Accounting, BSc Public Policy and Administration, B.N.Sc Nursing Science and BSc Public Health.
