Nude content captured by consenting sexual partners sometimes ends up in the wrong hands. As sex tapes of notable people make rounds on social media with their attendant damage and controversies, here are four things to consider, according to experts.
1. According to Sex therapist, Louis Venter, “It is very dangerous to have naked pictures or videos on your phone because of cyber security.”
The dangers of lax Internet security was evident in the targeted hack attack on the personal iPhone accounts of dozens of actresses and personalities, including Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst and Selena Gomez, which resulted in hundreds of nude photos spewed across the web.
2. According to Nigeria’s National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Sextortion/Sexual Exploitation, which is the act of sexual exploitation by threatening to distribute obscene images and videos of people who refuse to grant sexual favours or money, is punishable under Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015 (as enacted).
3. According to Relationship and etiquette expert, April Masini, “With the internet, it’s hard to know who will end up seeing something that you’re texting as private, your partner may also deliberately send your nudes to someone else, and this is something to be conscious of. It’s important to keep in mind that your current partner might not be your partner forever.”
4. According to Memorial University social media professor, Lyle Wetsch, nude photos shared on social media live on the internet forever, potentially harming a person’s future employment.
