Former United States President, Barack Obama, has commended the bravery and professionalism of the United States Secret Service following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, saying the incident was a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that Secret Service Agents show every day.

Reacting in a post shared Sunday night on his verified Facebook account, Obama stressed the need to reject violence in democratic spaces while praising the swift response of security personnel.

“Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy,” he wrote.

He added, “It’s also a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service Agents show every day. I’m grateful to them, and thankful that the agent who was shot is going to be okay.”

LEADERSHIP reports that gunshots had rung out late Saturday at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, triggering panic and a rapid security response. The event, which had President Donald Trump in attendance for the first time alongside First Lady Melania Trump and Vice-President JD Vance, was held at the Washington Hilton and was attended by hundreds of journalists, government officials, and celebrities.

Authorities said a suspected gunman attempted to breach security checkpoints in the hotel foyer at about 00:45 GMT. Witnesses reported hearing multiple loud bangs as US Secret Service agents quickly evacuated the president and other top officials.

During the confrontation, an officer was shot at close range but survived after his bulletproof vest absorbed the impact. Officials confirmed that the injured officer was in stable condition.

Police later identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. According to Washington, D.C. Police Chief Jeffery W Carroll, Allen was a registered guest at the hotel, and his room has been secured as part of ongoing investigations.

Allen is expected to face multiple charges, including the use of a firearm during a crime of violence, when he appears in court this Monday.

Despite the chaos, many attendees remained inside the ballroom for nearly an hour before authorities declared the area secure. Security presence across Washington, D.C. was heightened afterwards, although officials said there was no immediate indication of a broader threat.

Reacting earlier, President Trump acknowledged the dangers associated with public office, stating, “I can’t imagine there’s any profession that’s more dangerous.”

The incident has also revived memories of the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, which occurred at the same venue in 1981, when the then-President Reagan was shot and seriously wounded but survived after emergency surgery.
