Abia State governor, Alex Otti, has praised United Nigeria Airlines for naming two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft after renowned novelist, late Prof. Chinua Achebe and Obi of Onitsha, HRH Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, describing the gesture as a fitting tribute to the contributions of the Igbo people to scholarship, leadership and national development.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Lagos, Otti said the decision reflected values of excellence, integrity, cultural pride and visionary leadership that have long been associated with the Igbo nation.

The governor commended the founder of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiora Okonkwo, for immortalising two iconic figures whose legacies continued to inspire generations across Nigeria and beyond.

“For remembering to honor our people, you will be honored,” Otti said while addressing guests at the event.

One of the aircraft was named after Chinua Achebe, author of the celebrated novel ‘Things Fall Apart’, widely regarded as one of the most influential works in African literature. The second aircraft was named after Obi Alfred Achebe in recognition of his contributions to traditional leadership, corporate governance, and public service.

Okonkwo said the decision was deliberate, noting that Achebe elevated the dignity of Africa through literature, while Obi Alfred Achebe represents excellence, service, and enduring leadership.

The event attracted political leaders, business executives, aviation stakeholders, and traditional rulers who paid tribute to the honourees and celebrated the achievements of the Igbo people.

Otti also used the occasion to provide an update on the proposed Abia Airport project, stating that work had reached an advanced stage. He commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for supporting aviation reforms and the airport initiative.

In his remarks, Keyamo disclosed that Otti had advocated for upgrading the proposed Abia airstrip into a full-fledged international airport and assured the Federal Government of the state’s commitment to counterpart funding while pledging continued support for the project.

Responding to the honour, Obi Alfred Achebe expressed gratitude and described the recognition as deeply meaningful. Other speakers, including Allen Onyema and former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, praised the initiative, saying it highlighted the resilience, creativity and global impact of the Igbo people while encouraging continued support for indigenous businesses and innovation.
