Palm Sunday: Show Empathy, Ease Nigerians’ Burden, CAN Tells Leaders

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the nation’s political and economic leaders to show empathy and take urgent steps to ease the growing burden on Nigerians, as Christians worldwide mark Palm Sunday.

In a statement signed by CAN president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association drew a parallel between Jesus Christ’s humble entry into Jerusalem and the kind of leadership Nigeria needs at this critical time.

“As we observe Palm Sunday, we remember a powerful moment. Jesus entered Jerusalem with calm resolve, at a time of uncertainty and expectation. It was not a show of force, but a message of peace, purpose, and hope,” he said.

Okoh warned that rising living costs, driven partly by global tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, are pushing many Nigerian families to the brink.

“Across Nigeria, many are feeling the weight of the times. The cost of living is rising. For countless families, daily life is getting harder.

“Events far beyond our borders are unsettling global energy markets. The impact is already here. Fuel is more expensive. Transport costs are rising. Food prices are climbing,” he said.

The CAN president emphasised that true leadership is not about the trappings of power but about restraint, empathy, and a steady focus on the common good.

“In moments like this, the calm and clarity of Palm Sunday matter even more. True leadership is not always loud. It is seen in restraint, in empathy, and in a steady focus on the common good.

“It is reflected in decisions that ease burdens, calm anxieties, and bring people together. This is a time for such wisdom,” Okoh added.

He also urged Nigerians, especially the youth who are feeling the strain most deeply, not to surrender to despair.

“To every Nigerian, especially the young and those feeling the strain most deeply, do not lose hope. The challenges are real, but they are not the end of the story,” he said.

The Christian association called on the church and all people of faith to stand for peace, strengthen unity, and support one another during the sacred season.

“As we journey through this sacred season, may the spirit of Palm Sunday guide us towards quiet courage, shared purpose, and a renewed commitment to the good of all,” he said.
