According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the newly appointed Emirs will serve under the Kano Emirate, which retains its status as the sole first-class emirate.

The new Emirs are Alhaji Muhammad Mahraz Karaye, who was the District Head of Rogo, now Emir of Karaye; Alhaji Muhammad Isa Umar, formerly the District Head of Bunkure, now Emir of Rano, and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir Gaya, who was the Emir of the defunct first-class Gaya Emirate, now Emir of new Gaya Emirate.

Governor Yusuf congratulated the newly appointed Emirs, urging them to uphold the culture, peace, and unity within their respective emirates. He emphasized the importance of their leadership in maintaining the harmony and progress of their communities.

LEADERSHIP reports that the creation of the second class emirates followed the governor’s assent to the State Emirates Bill 2024 on July 16, 2024, establishing the jurisdictions for each new emirate.

The Rano Emirate will encompass Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Local Government Areas; the Gaya Emirate will cover Gaya, Ajingi, and Albasu Local Government Areas; while the Karaye Emirate will include Karaye and Rogo Local Government Areas.

Kano Emirate will control the largest domain in the state with about 36 local government areas under its direct control.

Emirs of the second-class emirates will report to the Emir of Kano and have the authority to advise him on matters related to public order, boundary disputes, land issues, and cultural and religious affairs within their jurisdictions.

Section 3 of the new law mandates that all appointments and activities of both first-class and second-class emirs must receive the governor’s approval through the State’s Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The statement emphasised that the appointments were effective immediately.
