What was expected to be a routine inter-house sports competition for pupils of Sunshine Schools in Ibadan, Oyo State, took an unexpected, festive turn on Thursday, as parents transformed the event into a vibrant cultural display.
The event, tagged “Sunshine Schools Olympics 2026”, featured the usual student track and field competitions. However, attention quickly shifted to parents of the pupils who appeared in coordinated Yoruba aso-ebi outfits, representing different houses in striking colours such as yellow, blue, and white.
Videos and photos circulating on social media showed the parents marching in organised groups, dancing and celebrating in a manner depicting a cultural festival rather than a mere school sporting event.
One Instagram user likened the spectacle to the famous Ojude Oba Festival, annually held in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and known for its elaborate parades and colourful attire, writing, “Na Ojude Oba be this o.”
The development has since sparked mixed reactions online, with many questioning whether the focus of the event had shifted from the children to the parents only.
Another Instagram user, @queenkhalisha2, commented, “Me I don’t even understand again if the activity is for the kids or parents.”
Another user, @tomiluxuryfabrics, added humorously, “Abeg nah parent dey do inter-house sport abi nah children. Koyemi oooo.”
Traditionally, inter-house sports in Nigerian schools are student-centered, with parents attending as spectators or guests, often dressed casually. However, the emergence of coordinated aso-ebi among parents suggests an evolving social dimension to such events.
While it remains unclear whether this trend will be adopted by other schools, the Ibadan spectacle has already ignited conversations about how school activities in Nigeria are increasingly blending competition with cultural expression and social display.
