Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a solid foundation for livestock development in Nigeria.

Mutfwang expressed this while hosting the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee led by Prof. Attahiru Jega while on a courtesy visit and stakeholders’ engagement forum held at the New Government House, Rayfield, Jos.

The Governor commended President Bola Tinubu for initiating practical measures to revive the livestock sector, noting that the move has the potential to address lingering security challenges arising from farmer-herder clashes while generating substantial revenue for the country’s economy.

“I must congratulate Mr. President for taking the bull by the horns. If there is anyone more challenged to make this a reality, it is us in Northern Nigeria,” the Governor remarked.

“This initiative presents opportunities to de-escalate conflicts, create employment, grow our GDP, and advance technological progress.”

The governor also highlighted Plateau State’s unique strengths, including its human resources, expertise, and favourable climate, which have positioned it as a key player in driving livestock reforms nationwide.

He also disclosed plans to establish the Ministry of Livestock Development by January 2025 to spearhead the transformation.

“We will domesticate this national initiative, taking into account our local peculiarities, and we must move forward together. A secure environment isn’t the presence of soldiers; it’s the absence of soldiers. Our focus should be on policies and strategies that de-escalate conflicts while building a progressive, productive, and profitable livestock ecosystem,” he stated.

Meanwhile Co-Chairman of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, Prof Jega commended Governor Mutfwang for his enthusiasm and commitment to realising the immense potential of the livestock sector.

He assured the Governor of the committee’s full support in transforming Plateau State into a model for livestock development.

“We have assessed Plateau and believe it can lead the development of livestock in this country,” Prof. Jega said. “The President established this committee in July 2024 to harness opportunities within the livestock sector. When fully developed, this sector will not only provide employment and boost productivity, but also enhance economic growth nationwide.”

He further explained that the committee is engaging stakeholders across the country to promote the initiative and explore the vast opportunities it presents for economic and social development.

Similarly, the state’s Commissioner of Agriculture, Hon. Ishaku Bugama, affirmed that Plateau State is fully equipped to drive livestock reforms and deliver impactful results for the nation.
