Plateau Varsity ASUU Threatens Indefinite Strike Over Non-Implementation Of 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University chapter, has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike over the Plateau State Government’s failure to implement the 2025 agreement reached between the union and the Federal Government.

The chapter’s chairperson, Dr. Vincent Choji, disclosed this at a weekend press conference in Jos, saying members unanimously resolved at a congress held on May 13 to commence industrial action if the agreement is not implemented.

Choji said the union submitted the 2025 agreement to the university management in February but had yet to receive any concrete commitment from the state government.

“We submitted the 2025 agreement to the university management in February,” he said. “On May 18, we received a response saying the government was studying its content to assess the financial and administrative implications. We are concerned that six months on, these bureaucratic protocols are still being observed for a university that is lawfully autonomous.”

He explained that the press conference was directed by the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU to remind the Plateau State Government that the continued delay in implementing the agreement, alongside unresolved issues relating to pensions, gratuities and the alleged victimisation of union members by the university management, could trigger industrial unrest.

According to him, the union remains dissatisfied with the pace of government action and warned that failure to address the outstanding issues could lead to an indefinite shutdown of academic activities at the institution.

Also speaking, former ASUU Bauchi Zone Coordinator, Prof. Lawan Abubakar, expressed solidarity with the Plateau State University chapter and urged the state government to act swiftly to avert a strike.

“We have four federal and three state universities in the Bauchi Zone. Out of these seven, only two state universities have not implemented the 2025 agreement, and Plateau State University is one of them,” Abubakar said.

“We urge the Plateau State Government to speedily implement the agreement to avert a looming, total, comprehensive and indefinite strike. We also appeal to parents and other stakeholders to engage the government to ensure the issues are resolved without further delay.”
