The Kano State Police Command has announced the arrest of 82 suspected criminals within a fortnight.
60 have been prosecuted, while the remaining are under investigation, the command said.
The state police commissioner, CP Salman Garba, made this known on Thursday at a press briefing, where SP Haruna Kiyawa, the spokesman, represented him.
“We must acknowledge the fact that all forms of crimes are reducing geometrically in the state, and this press conference underscores the importance of the implementation of robust community policing initiatives, intelligence-led policing and targeted clearance operations in combating crimes and ensuring a safe environment for all, which is in line with the directives and visions of the Inspector-General of police IGP Kayode Egberokun,” he stated.
“These operations conducted resulted in the arrest of a total of 82 suspects and recovery of firearms, dangerous weapons, illicit drugs and stolen property”, he added.
The CP explained further that the suspects include armed robbers, thugs, fraudsters, drug dealers and kidnappers, with one AK47 rifle, three locally made guns, thirteen cutlasses, sixteen knives, three motorcycles and one tricycle.
He also stated that fifty sachets of Diazepam Tablets, 42 sachets of Tramadol, 24 parcels and one hundred and seventy-five wraps of dried leaves were suspected to be Indian hemp. Also recovered are 307 sachets of Pregabalin tablets, two bottles of suck and die, 10 sliding windows and 10 mobile phones.
“I must appreciate the sustained support of the Kano state government under the leadership of His Excellency, the executive governor of Kano state Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, particularly the generous donation of seventy-eight (78) patrol motor vehicles to this command.
“This gesture will significantly enhance our operational capacity and response times, enabling us to serve the people of Kano state better.
“I also thanked the good people of Kano state for their cooperation and trust in the Police Command,” he concluded.
