Anti-crime operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested one Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, the village head of Ibagwa in Abak local government area of the state for allegedly shooting a woman during a heated argument.
Spokesperson of Akwa Ibom Police Command, DSP Timfon John who disclosed this to journalists in Uyo, explained that the traditional ruler took the laws into his hands by deliberatly firing gunshots at the woman said to be his sister over palm fruits dispute.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the victim, who was shot in the head by the monarch was currently receiving emergency treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
“At approximately 2:30pm, operatives of the Command received a report of an attempted murder from Ibagwa community in Abak LGA.
“According to the report filed by a man (name withheld) that his brother, Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, the Village Head of Ibagwa, allegedly shot their sister, Unwana Effiong Friday Inyang, 32, in the head with a gun.
“The victim was immediately taken to a Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition,” the police spokesperson said.
She explained that police mobilised to the scene where the suspect, Chief Umoren was arrested and taken into custody.
The police image maker added that a long, single-barrel gun believed to have been used in the assault was recovered from the suspect.
According to John, preliminary investigations suggested that the incident arose from a misunderstanding over palm fruits.
She assured that the law would take its normal cause at the completion of investigations.
