Police officers from the Lagos State Command have rescued a man who attempted to jump into a lagoon at night, after reportedly discovering his wife’s infidelity during a live video call.
In a video posted on X by user Teniola that is currently gaining traction, the man, visibly distressed, nearly took his own life before a police officer and locals intervened and pulled him to safety.
However, instead of receiving compassion, he was scolded, beaten, and questioned about why he would want to end his life over a woman. Throughout the ordeal, he remained silent, crying while still connected to the call with his wife.
The incident has sparked intense debate online, with netizens divided in their reactions: One user, MissB, criticised the man’s actions, saying, “Women deal with cheating husbands all the time, and it messes up what betrayal can do to a person. His wife must be the one paying for his lifestyle; he definitely is a man with no focus. Why end your life because of another person? He needs to man up and get a grip; he’s so dramatic. Just move on and divorce her. Simple.”
For Dr Marife, infidelity is widespread, saying, “It’s time most of these men get acquainted with the fact that 95 per cent of women cheat and there is a high probability that your wife is among the 95 per cent. When you get yourself acquainted with these facts, the discovery of your wife cheating will have less impact on you, as it’s something you’ve already anticipated.
“So committing suicide over a cheating wife is just a double win for the cheater.”
Gozie Vibe offered a more empathetic view: “Save first, support next. No one deserves mockery in their lowest moment. Catching a partner cheating can trigger intense emotions, shock, humiliation, anger, heartbreak, especially when it happens publicly on a live call.”
Blue Point suggested retaliation, saying, “I understand the love he had for his wife. But if he dies, his wife will continue with that same man or move on. The best thing this man can do is to cheat back. Aura for aura.”
