The International Association of World Peace Advocates IAWPA has declared that political parties in Nigeria should as a matter of national interest and protection of democracy in the country, commit to political tolerance.
The foremost international Peace organization said the reported cases of attacks against members of rival political parties is worrisome and sends a very wrong signal.
IAWPA which will be celebrating the United Nations Tolerance Day in Abuja, Nigeria, believes the cooperation of political parties and commitment to peace and tolerance is imperative if the country must get it right come 2023. It decries verbal and physical attacks on Supporters of political parties a situation it said needs to be addressed strongly.
The statement which was signed by its International Spokesman Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke urged all political parties desirous of committing to political tolerance to attend the event which is billed to hold on Wednesday 16th November at Merit House, Maitama, Abuja. All the political parties that will participate at the event will be given a Certificate of Tolerance.
There have been reported cases of political attacks in the country which has left so many people injured and cars damaged. The latest being the only reported cases of attacks against the convoy of one of the candidates of a major political party.
While decrying such incidents, IAWPA said it is working seriously in that regard hence it’s decision to launch a Tolerance Dashboard that will help observe the tolerance level before, during and after the forthcoming elections.
“Aside launching the Tolerance Dashboard, we also intend to unveil young boys and girls as Tolerance Champions. They will work with the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in the area of observing the elections from the perspective of political tolerance. Their report will help address the issue not only in Nigeria but Africa as a whole.
