Popoola Wins Inaugural TYB Captain’s Golf Tournament

Abiola Popoola has emerged as the overall champion of the inaugural TYB Captain’s Golf Tournament, held at the prestigious Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club (TYB-IGRCC) in Abuja.

The tournament, which commenced on Monday and concluded on Saturday, showcased an impressive array of talent. Popoola, who played off a handicap of 18, achieved a commendable score of 84 gross and 66 nett, securing the top prize amidst fierce competition.

In a statement following his victory, Popoola expressed his gratitude towards the Club Captain, Brigadier General Nicholas Ashinze, for his exemplary leadership and commitment to enhancing the facilities at the club. “I feel honoured to have won this prestigious tournament. The competition was intense, but I maintained my focus throughout the rounds,” Popoola remarked. “I commend the captain for his outstanding efforts; his leadership has fostered significant improvements within the club and has inspired all members.”

Captain Ashinze hailed the tournament as a celebration of leadership, sportsmanship, and unity among golfers and stakeholders. “It is a privilege to host this inaugural tournament. Our vision is to cultivate a world-class golfing environment for both members and guests,” he stated. “We are committed to ongoing improvements in our facilities and to nurturing the spirit of camaraderie that distinguishes this club.”

Maj. Gen. Godwin Umelo (Rtd), Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, praised the participants, sponsors, and officials for their invaluable support, which contributed to the event’s success. “This tournament signifies a significant milestone for the club. The overwhelming support from golfers and sponsors has made this competition truly memorable,” Umelo remarked. “We take pride in the standards displayed throughout the tournament and are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to its success.”

Dr. Ali Peters, Vice Captain of TYB-IGRCC, also extended his appreciation to guests, sponsors, and players who made the event a triumph. He acknowledged the Grand Patron of TYB-IGRCC, Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for his steadfast leadership and unwavering support, which facilitated the organisation of this world-class tournament. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the Patron of TYB-IGRCC, Maj. Gen. VU Okoro, for his guidance and encouragement, which have been instrumental in shaping the club’s vision.

“We are thrilled with the success of this inaugural tournament. The turnout and participation levels were exceptional,” Peters stated. “The meticulous planning and execution of this event mark the realisation of a long-held vision for TYB-IGRCC. With participation from distinguished local and international golfers, our club is steadily solidifying its reputation as a premier golfing destination in Nigeria. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our Life Patron, Grand Patron, Patron, Past Grand Patrons, Past Patrons, and Past Captains. Special thanks also go to Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), and Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, President of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF). The dedication exhibited by our members, sponsors, and the Local Organising Committee reflects the bright future of TYB-IGRCC as a leading golfing destination,” he concluded.

In the Men’s Category One (handicap 0–18), F.F. Ogu secured the best nett prize with a score of 78 gross and a handicap of 12, achieving a nett score of 66. Aliyu Ambursa finished as the runner-up nett with 81 gross, a handicap of 14, and 67 nett, while Nura Umar claimed the second runner-up nett with 80 gross, a handicap of 12, and 68 nett. J.A. Bello was awarded best gross with a score of 76 gross, and Godwin Gabriel was recognised as the runner-up gross with 77 gross.

In the Ladies Category One, Faridah Wada took home the best nett prize with 86 gross and a handicap of 17, narrowly defeating Rose Nyam on countback. Patience Abechi was named best gross in the ladies’ category with a score of 84 gross, while Andrew Odoh emerged victorious in the professional category with an impressive score of 65 gross.

The caddies and staff categories saw Aminu Mohammed win the senior caddies prize with a score of 74 gross, while Yusuf Saliyu claimed the junior caddies title with 82 gross. Jessica Solomon secured the ladies’ caddies category with a score of 96 gross, Aisha Mohammed was named best in staff ladies with 120 gross, and Longinus Yohanna won the staff men category with 86 gross.

The tournament also featured the inauguration of the club’s 19th Hole Premium Lounge, which was officiated by Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Undiandeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence. Additionally, the newly constructed bridge linking Hole Three fairway and Hole Four tee-box, donated by the immediate past TYB Golf Club Captain, Maj. Gen. S.S. Jiya, was commissioned by Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu.

The closing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Barrister Hannatu Musawa, Minister of the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, and Dr. Lami Ahmed, President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN). Other notable attendees included Brig. Gen. Mustapha Onoyiveta (Rtd), Aide-de-Camp to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and Boboye Oyeyemi, former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), among others. (NAN)
