Prices of essential food items such as rice, beans, vegetables, among others, have crashed in Enugu.

Our investigations in different markets in Enugu, confirmed the reduction in the prices of the items.

Most of the traders who spoke to our correspondent attributed the crash in the prices of the items to improved rainfall.

Some of them  attributed it to the forces of demand and supply and large presence of the items  in the markets.

It was learnt that one paint (measurement) of rice sold at between N7,000 and N8, 000 before now sells for between N5,000 and N5,500 at the different markets.

Also, one paint of beans which sold for between N6,000 and N7,000 before is now sold at N5,000.

A bunch of pumpkin leaf sold for between N1,000  and N2,000 before now costs N500.

The prices of pepper, tomatoes and onions have all also dropped.

A trader at Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, Mrs Ifeoma Obigeri, attributed it to the forces of demand and supply.

” I knew that the prices of these items will crash because many people are bringing the items to the market thereby making the products’ supply to increase.

“The ongoing rains also played a significant role because items like vegetables are everywhere and that is why their prices have crashed,” she stated.
