Quality Sleep Key To Staying Healthy During Ramadan And Lent, Experts Say

Quality sleep is key to staying healthy during Ramadan and the Lenten fasting season, sleep experts and health professionals have said, urging Nigerians observing the religious periods to prioritise adequate rest to maintain physical wellbeing, mental clarity and productivity.

Fasting is a deeply significant spiritual practice for both Muslims and Christians. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset, while many Christians observe fasting and reflection during Lent.

While these practices strengthen spiritual discipline and devotion, health experts note that maintaining adequate rest is essential to fully experience the physical and mental benefits of fasting.

According to Dr. Usman Abba Ahmed, vice president of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP), fasting offers numerous health benefits including improved metabolism, detoxification, better cardiovascular health, enhanced immune function, and weight management.

However, these benefits are best realised when the body is supported with adequate sleep.
“Sleep is an important physiological process that allows the body to refresh, repair, and maintain optimal functioning. When sleep routines are disrupted, it can affect alertness, mood, appetite regulation, and overall productivity. During fasting periods, maintaining good sleep hygiene is particularly important to sustain both physical and mental well-being,” Ahmed said.

During Ramadan in particular, many faithful adjust their daily routines to accommodate pre-dawn meals (Suhoor), evening meals (Iftar), and night prayers such as Taraweeh. These changes can alter normal sleep patterns and lead to sleep deprivation if not properly managed. Research indicates that insufficient sleep can affect hormones that regulate appetite, potentially making fasting more challenging and reducing daytime performance.

Health experts recommend practical steps to maintain adequate rest during fasting periods. These include going to bed soon after night prayers, taking short daytime naps of about 20 minutes if necessary, avoiding heavy or high-sugar meals close to bedtime, and limiting caffeine intake in the hours leading to sleep. Creating a comfortable, quiet, and dark sleep environment also plays an important role in achieving restorative rest.

In Islamic teachings, the importance of balancing worship with sufficient rest is well-documented. Several Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasise that the body has a right to rest, encouraging believers to sleep when tired in order to maintain strength and devotion.

Beyond the spiritual benefits, fasting has been linked to improved blood sugar regulation, detoxification, enhanced cognitive function, and reduced stress levels. These advantages contribute to improved physical health and mental clarity, reinforcing the value of fasting as both a spiritual and wellness practice.

As conversations around healthy living during fasting periods continue, mattress manufacturer Mouka has also highlighted the role of good sleep habits in maintaining overall wellbeing.

The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy notes that supportive sleep surfaces, including products such as Mouka mattresses, can help improve comfort and spinal support, which may contribute to more restorative sleep when daily routines change during periods like Ramadan or Lent.

“Quality sleep is an essential pillar of health. When individuals combine fasting with adequate rest, balanced nutrition, and proper hydration, they are better positioned to experience the full physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of the season,: Ahmed affirmed.

As Nigerians across faiths engage in this sacred period of reflection and discipline, Mouka encourages everyone to prioritise healthy sleep habits to remain energised, focused, and productive throughout the fasting season.
