A rainstorm has killed two persons and destroyed over 50 houses in Dokan Mai-Jama’a, Chikun local government area (LGA) of Kaduna State.
The incident rendered scores of residents homeless.
The village head of the community, Alhaji Hamisu Tukur, who confirmed the disaster, said the victims died as a result of the impact of the storm on the area.
He added that several other residents sustained varying degrees of injuries, particularly as strong winds tore off rooftops and flung roofing sheets across the community.
According to him, the rainstorm, which struck at about 6:41 p.m. on Monday, lasted for over 40 minutes, causing widespread destruction to homes and property.
Tukur further said that many affected residents were seen salvaging their belongings from the debris, while others took refuge with neighbours and relatives.
He added that while some houses were completely destroyed, others had their roofs blown off, thereby worsening the plight of affected families.
Residents described the incident as one of the most devastating in recent times and appealed for urgent intervention.
In a related development, the rainstorm also affected Sabon Gyero community, also within Chikun LGA, where several houses were damaged and more than 10 perimeter fences destroyed.
The downpour further disrupted movement in the area, as a major road was blocked, forcing motorists to take alternative routes.
The victims called on the Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the State Emergency Management Agency to come to their aid.
Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Kaduna has deployed a team to the affected community to assess the extent of the damage and determine the immediate needs of victims.
