Rising Attacks On Security Agents
Share on WhatsAppShare on FacebookShare on TwitterTelegram

There seems to be a recent spike in the killings of security officials in the country .

Last Monday, bandits killed seven Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officers alongside five other officials of sister security agencies and local security service in Kaduna. The sad incident took place at the Kuriga mining site in Birnin Gwari local government area of the state.

The NSCDC said that the personnel who were attached to the State Ministry of Mines were killed while on official duty at the mining site.

Also, four police officers were killed recently during an attack on the convoy of a former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim.

We also recall that two policemen were killed when gunmen attacked the convoy of the senator representing Anambra South, Ifeanyi Ubah, in September last year.

Also, an investigation by this newspapers showed that gunmen have killed at least 37 police officers in 52 attacks on towns and communities in the South East geopolitical zone of Nigeria,

Data obtained from the Council on Foreign Relations’ Nigeria Security Tracker (NST), a website that tracks violent incidents related to political, economic, and social grievances directed at the state or other affiliated groups said non- state killed 138 policemen in eight months in Nigeria in 2022. And that is a country not officially at war.

In the considered opinion of this Newspaper, the recent killings of security agents in Nigeria is a cause for serious concern .

These acts of violence against those who are sworn to protect and serve the public are unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.

The security of Nigeria’s citizens is of paramount importance, and the loss of any member of the security forces is a tragic event that should not be taken lightly. The role of security agents is to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens, and it is imperative that they are able to do so without fear of being targeted for violence.

The reasons behind these killings are complex and multifaceted. Some have pointed to the ongoing conflict with Boko Haram and other extremist groups, while others have cited issues of poverty and unemployment as contributing factors. Regardless of the underlying causes, however, it is clear that concerted effort must be made to address these issues and bring an end to the violence.

One possible solution would be to increase the resources and training available to security agents. This could include providing better equipment and weapons, as well as training in the latest tactics and techniques for dealing with terrorist groups and other criminal elements.

Additionally, increased intelligence and surveillance capabilities would be essential in tracking down those responsible for the killings and bringing them to justice.

Another important step would be to address the underlying social and economic issues that are fueling the violence. This could involve investing in programmes that address poverty and unemployment, as well as increasing access to education andx other basic services.

Also, efforts must be made to combat corruption and improve governance at all levels, as these issues are deeply intertwined with the problem of violence and insecurity.

It is also crucial that the government and the security agencies work closely with the communities affected by violence, to ensure that they have a voice in the process of addressing these issues. This includes working with traditional and religious leaders, as well as civil society organisations, to build trust and establish effective communication channels.

Ultimately, it will take a multi-faceted approach to address the problem of killings of security agents in Nigeria. This will require the cooperation and support of government officials, security agencies, community leaders, and citizens alike. It is a difficult and challenging task, but one that is essential for the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.

We must also remember that the sacrifices made by our security agents should never be forgotten. Their families should be given the best support and welfare to ease the burden of their loss. It is also important that the government honour their sacrifice by making sure their deaths are not in vain. One way to do ensure this is to carry out thorough investigations, uncover the culprits and bring them to speedy justice. That will serve as a deterrent to others.

In conclusion, the killings of security agents in Nigeria are a grave threat to the safety and security of all citizens, and must be addressed with the utmost urgency and determination. We call on all parties to come together to find a solution to this problem, and to work towards a safer and more peaceful Nigeria for all.
