Russia Strikes Ukraine, Kills 12, Injures Over 70

Russia unleashed a devastating barrage of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine on Friday, claiming at least 12 innocent lives and injuring over 70. This marks one of the largest air attacks of the conflict, leaving a trail of destruction and raising urgent questions about the future of Western support.

“Today, Russia rained down almost everything in its arsenal upon us,” declared President Volodymyr Zelensky. The military confirmed the sheer scale of the assault, revealing 158 missiles and drones raining down across the country, with 114 intercepted.

This brutal bombardment targeted at least six major cities, from Kharkiv in the east to Lviv in the west, highlighting a deliberate attempt to terrorise and overwhelm Ukrainian defenses. Warehouses, shopping malls, and even a maternity hospital bore the brunt of the carnage, raising fears of a deliberate targeting of civilians.

In Kyiv, residents awoke to the terrifying echoes of explosions as a 3,000-square-meter warehouse engulfed in flames. Firefighters battled the inferno under a thick plume of black smoke, desperately searching for 10 individuals believed trapped beneath the rubble. The capital mourned two lost lives, while its Lukyanivska metro station, once a haven, stood wounded, its entrance sealed shut.

Days after a daring Ukrainian strike crippled a Russian warship in Crimea, Friday’s assault served as a chilling reminder of the war’s brutal reality. In Dnipro, a maternity hospital lay heavily damaged, though thankfully staff and patients found refuge in time. Yet, a nearby shopping mall fell victim to the flames, claiming five lives and injuring over 20.

Across the nation, similar scenes unfolded – Kharkiv reeling from 20 strikes, Lviv mourning one and tending to 15 wounded after attacks on apartment buildings and schools. This indiscriminate violence underscores the urgent need for continued Western support.

As uncertainty swirls around future aid, Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak’s plea rings out, “We need more support, more strength to stop this terror.” The world watches with bated breath, questioning whether Kyiv’s main backer, the United States, will solidify its commitment in the face of this escalating brutality.

Friday’s air attack may be yet another tragic chapter in this ongoing war, but it also serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of unchecked aggression. As innocent lives are shattered and cities bear the scars of violence, the question remains: how long will the world stand by in the face of such blatant disregard for humanity?
