Saudi Arabia Eyes Nigeria’s Housing Sector, Targets Major Investment Partnership

Nigeria and Saudi Arabia are set to deepen bilateral cooperation in housing and infrastructure development following high-level talks between the federal government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia aimed at attracting large-scale investment into Nigeria’s housing sector and tackling the country’s huge housing deficit.

The renewed push for collaboration emerged on Wednesday when the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, hosted the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef Bin Muhammad Al-Balawi, in Abuja.

At the meeting, both countries explored strategic areas of partnership, including infrastructure development, real estate investment, technology transfer and increased participation of Saudi developers in Nigeria’s housing market.

Discussions also focused on Nigeria’s participation in the forthcoming Riyadh Real Estate Future Forum (RFF) scheduled for January next year.

Speaking during the meeting, Darma welcomed Saudi Arabia’s interest in Nigeria’s housing sector, describing the country as Africa’s largest nation with enormous housing and infrastructure requirements that present significant investment opportunities.

The minister said international partnerships remain critical to achieving the Federal Government’s housing delivery targets under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He stressed that Nigeria’s housing deficit requires innovative financing, technical expertise and global partnerships, adding that collaboration with countries that have recorded remarkable success in mass housing delivery would accelerate the provision of affordable homes for Nigerians.

According to him, Saudi Arabia’s experience in delivering large-scale housing projects offers valuable lessons that could strengthen Nigeria’s ongoing housing reforms and expand access to decent accommodation across the country.

The minister further noted that beyond housing construction, the proposed partnership would enhance investment inflows, create jobs, stimulate economic growth and reinforce the long-standing diplomatic relationship between both nations.

Responding, the Saudi Ambassador reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s housing development efforts, saying the Kingdom was prepared to share its expertise, technical knowledge and best practices in large-scale housing delivery.

Al-Balawi highlighted the achievements of Saudi Arabia’s National Housing Company, explaining that the government-backed institution has successfully delivered extensive housing projects across the Kingdom and could serve as a model for future collaboration with Nigeria.

He added that the proposed partnership would not only support Nigeria’s efforts to bridge its housing deficit but also open opportunities for qualified Nigerian professionals and skilled construction workers to participate in housing projects in Saudi Arabia, thereby promoting employment and knowledge transfer.

The envoy also expressed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with Nigeria, while welcoming plans to expand Nigeria’s diplomatic presence in the Kingdom.

The meeting underscored the determination of both countries to build a strategic alliance capable of accelerating housing delivery, attracting foreign investment and unlocking new economic opportunities in Nigeria’s real estate sector.
