Amidst the crisis brewing in the opposition Social Democratic Party, SDP, former Imo state Social Democratic Party, SDP, gubernatorial candidate in the Nov 2023 election, Hon Bright Obina Ekwebelem has cautioned those plotting to destabilize the party ahead of the 2027 election to redress their steps and work for the party’s unity and progress.

Speaking to journalists at the weekend, Ekwebelem, the SDP, National Vice Chairman, South East, who condemned the purported suspension of the National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam and two members of the National Working Committee, NWC, by the National Secretary, Dr Olu Agunloye and National Publicity Secretary Rufus Ayienigba, describing it as unwarranted and baseless, urging them to sheathe their swords.
However, he expressed optimism that the party would emerge from the crisis stronger and more united, adding that the crisis in the party shows that the SDP was a strong and viable platform.

Ekwebelem noted that the South East caucus strongly supports the Shehu Musa Gabam-led NWC, adding that he has repositioned the party since assuming office as the National Chairman.

He said, “There was no suspension in the first place. The NWC meeting was not held; they used that purported suspension and unfounded allegations to blackmail the National Chairman and cause confusion in the party, which we will resist”

The party stalwart condemned the attempt by some members of the National Working Committee, NWC, to ethnicize the party, warning that the Social Democratic Party, SDP, is a national party and should not be embroiled in ethnic politics and reduced to a sectional party.
