Juventus succumbed to a shock 4-2 defeat at the hands of Sassuolo, but the most bizarre moment of the game came when Federico Gatti scored an own goal.

The Juventus star attempted a no-look pass to his goalie and the ball ended up in their own net.

Football fans were left saying Juventus players were “drunk” after witnessing one of the strangest own goals over the weekend.

The Old Lady was comprehensively beaten by Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium to end their unbeaten start to the new Serie A campaign.

Federico Gatti appeared to attempt to play a back pass to his goalkeeper, former Arsenal man Wojciech Szczęsny.

But Szczęsny, who had played an initial pass while he was near the corner flag, was not on the same wavelength as Gatti, who ended up looking silly with his ‘no-look’ back pass, leaving fans on social media aghast.

That one moment summed up what was a miserable night for Juventus, who slipped from second to fourth on the log as a result of the defeat.

On social media, fans did not hold back in their criticisms of the Italian club for the way it conceded the own goal.

@benny_brazil said: “Suspicious. Keeper doesn’t even move a step towards the ball. Match fixing returning to Serie A?”

@MilanEns1 added: This is peak Serie A and I won’t change it for anything.”

@thebigfella007 said: “Nice to see match fixing alive and well in Serie A.”

@GingerPirlo_ added: “Someone check if Juve have gone back to match fixing. Jesus christ.”

Sports Brief also reported Massimiliano Allegri’s decision to start the same line-up for Juventus for a second game running.

The Italian boss returned to the club in 2021, and for the first time since his first game against Udinese, he named an unchanged XI, sticking to the same 11 that beat Lazio last week, as noted by Opta Paolo.

Allegri is in the third season of his second spell, having returned to the club after a two-year hiatus, during which the club had two managers – Maurizio Sarri and Andrea Pirlo.
