LOVING
Confident and moving, this film tells the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple whose marriage led to a landmark Supreme Court case. The film follows their legal battle after being arrested in 1958 for violating Virginia’s laws against interracial marriage.

PRIDE
This fact-based drama is about an underdog African American swim team in the 1970s deals with racism head-on, showing how the swimmers faced and stood up to prejudice in their quest to succeed.

THE GREAT DEBATERS
Denzel Washington stars in this inspirational, fact-based drama about a debate team that overcomes severe prejudice on the way to national fame. Expect unvarnished discussions and representations of 1930s racism, including a brutal lynching scene.

THE COLOUR PURPLE
This intense drama based on Alice Walker’s award-winning novel deals with serious themes (including incest and abuse), but it will open mature teens’ eyes to the difficulties that women, especially Black women experienced in the early 20th century.

JUST MERCY
This effective, intense drama, which paints a picture of simmering racial injustice, is based on the true story of Equal Justice Initiative founder Bryan Stevenson, who focuses on helping wrongfully convicted death row inmates.
