Smartphone Producers Turn to Hardware Innovation as Competition Intensifies

Smartphone producers Samsung, Apple and TECNO are intensifying competition in the global smartphone market with a new wave of hardware innovations, as manufacturers increasingly look beyond artificial intelligence (AI) features and camera enhancements to differentiate their devices and attract consumers.

The renewed focus on foldable devices, immersive displays and improved durability comes as smartphone vendors look for new growth opportunities in a maturing global market where replacement cycles have slowed, and consumers are demanding more practical innovation.

According to industry data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), global smartphone shipments returned to modest growth in recent quarters, driven largely by premium devices, foldables and emerging markets, while research firm Counterpoint Research has projected continued momentum for foldable smartphones despite broader economic headwinds.

Samsung Electronics has reinforced its leadership in the foldable smartphone segment with the unveiling of its eighth-generation Galaxy foldables during its Galaxy Unpacked event in London. The lineup includes the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8.

The flagship Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra features an 8-inch display when unfolded, measures 4.1mm in thickness when opened, and weighs 215 grams. It also introduces Flex Titanium technology designed to improve durability while reducing the visibility of the display crease.

The South Korean technology giant said the innovation is aimed at giving users a larger workspace without the need for a separate tablet, while the Flip8 targets portability by allowing the device to fold into a more compact form.

However, Apple, on its part, has continued refining the conventional smartphone experience with the iPhone 17, introducing contoured edges, Ceramic Shield 2 protection, a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display and ProMotion technology with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The device also features a 48-megapixel Fusion main camera with 2x optical-quality telephoto capability and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera.

According to technology publication MacRumors, Apple’s next-generation iPhone 18 Pro, expected in 2027, could feature a variable-aperture main camera, a more efficient display, a next-generation A20 Pro processor and a smaller Dynamic Island interface.

The report noted that a variable-aperture camera would physically adjust the amount of light entering the sensor, offering photographers greater control over exposure and depth of field rather than relying solely on computational photography.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer TECNO is taking a different approach by focusing on display engineering through its Next-Generation Bezelless Concept Phone, which seeks to eliminate the traditional black border around smartphone screens.

The company said the concept, expected to make its public debut at the IFA 2026 technology exhibition in September, was achieved through advanced internal component stacking, structural re-engineering and new screen-packaging technologies.

Industry observers and analysts say removing bezels presents a significant engineering challenge because display borders traditionally accommodate internal circuitry, structural support and screen integration needed to ensure device durability.
