Sokoto Approves N1.76bn For 1000 Motorcycles To Fight Banditry

The Sokoto State Government has approved N1.759billion for the purchase of 1,000 Bajaj motorcycles to support security agencies in tackling banditry and strengthen security operations across the state.

The approval was among the decisions reached at the sixth regular meeting of the Sokoto State Executive Council for 2026, presided over by the Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammad Gobir.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Abubakar Bawa, the motorcycles would complement the 62 armoured vehicles recently acquired by the state government at a cost of N27billion and distributed to security agencies.

The government said the motorcycles would improve the mobility of security personnel, particularly in remote communities and difficult terrains affected by banditry.

Bawa said the procurement was part of the administration’s efforts to equip security agencies with the logistics required to effectively combat criminal activities across the state.

He quoted the council as emphasising the need to strengthen security operations, noting that the 1,000 motorcycles would complement the newly acquired armoured vehicles and boost the operational capacity of security agencies.

Beyond security, the council approved several projects in education, healthcare, water supply and human development.

It approved N723.17million for the renovation of Government Technical College, Runjin Sambo, while N498.99million was approved for the rehabilitation of A.A. Raji Special School.

The Council also approved N489.32million for the renovation of Phase I of the College of Nursing Sciences and N229.36million for the renovation of male and female hostels at the College of Basic and Remedial Studies.

Similarly, N174.64million was approved for the renovation of staff quarters and upgrading of the perimeter fence at the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Wurno.

In the health sector, the council approved N133.67million for the construction of a perimeter fence at Wamakko Primary Health Centre.

It also approved N93.88million for the procurement of vocational learning equipment for 46 women’s vocational centres spread across the state’s 23 local government areas.

Another N90.21million was approved for the purchase of PVC pipes and plumbing fittings for the maintenance of 142 semi-urban water supply schemes across Sokoto.

Bawa said the approvals reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening security while investing in critical infrastructure and human development.

He said the meeting, which lasted about two hours, considered issues relating to the security and socio-economic development of the state.

“The government remains committed to implementing projects and programmes that will directly impact the lives of the people and contribute to the overall development of Sokoto State,” Bawa said.
