Stakeholders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Nasarawa State have canvassed for the zoning of the party’s national chairmanship position to the state.
The party members under the aegis of Nasarawa “Concerned PDP Stakeholders” made its position known through a statement by its leader, Mustapha Ibrahim Umaisha.
The group said the state chapter of the PDP has been consistently marginalised in the distribution of positions within the party’s top hierarchy at the national level despite the sacrifices and contribution of the chapter to its development over the years.
It pointed out that its neighbours in Benue, Plateau and Kogi states, have produced the chairmanship position of the party, while Kwara and Niger also held top positions at one time or the other.
The stakeholders drew attention to its sacrifice of the advisory position of the Board of Trustees (BoT), chairman, which is the highest position the state ever held during the crisis ahead of the 2023 election to buttress its point.
It said time has come for the party to appreciate the contribution of the state chapter by compensating it with the party’s topmost position in the spirit of fairness and equity which the party stands for.
“In the spirit of inclusivity, it is time for Nasarawa to be at the forefront of the PDP’s leadership, a position we hardly enjoy.
“It is imperative to acknowledge Nasarawa’s loyalty to both national and state politics, the state’s significant role and gains in recent electoral contests which produced a senator and half of the state legislators, and even went ahead to win the gubernatorial contest but was denied by the courts and not the people. We need encouragement,” it stated.
The group argued that the state showcases qualified and distinguished individuals as potential candidates for the national chairmanship position, but would rather see that its last gubernatorial candidate, Dr. David Emmanuel Ombugadu is considered for the position.
It said Ombugadu is a dynamic and impactful leader whose track record speaks volumes about his ability to drive positive change within the party.
