The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced a new date for the local government elections, moving the exercise to October 26, 2024.

LEADERSHIP reports that the elections were initially scheduled for November 30th.

However, KANSIEC Chairman, Ferfasa Sani Lawan Malunfashi gave the new date during a press conference in Kano on Friday.

Malunfashi explained that the commission’s decision to reduce the election timeline is to comply with the Supreme Court ruling recognising the independence of local government authorities.

“To align with the Supreme Court’s directive on local government autonomy, we have decided to move the election date forward to October 26,” said Malunfashi.

He emphasised that the commission is committed to upholding democratic processes and ensuring that local governments are given their constitutionally entitled autonomy.

According to the revised election schedule, all political activities, including campaigns, will commence on September 1th and continue till the evening of October 25th.

This adjustment gives political parties less time to prepare and campaign, potentially intensifying political activity in the coming weeks.
