Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State chapter, has elected Rev Fr Williams Awoshiri as its new chairman after a series of wranglings.

After his election, Awoshiri said his tenure would be guided by the association’s motto, “That they all may be one” (John 17:21), stressing that unity among Christians and collaboration with other faiths are key under his leadership to foster peace and progress in the state.

“There can be no peace without unity, and no development without justice. My administration will work with like-minds from all faiths to promote peace, justice and development in Taraba.

“When we unite the Christian faith, we will be able to expand the gospel to non-Christians and bring more people to Christ,” he said.

The election, which was conducted peacefully in Jalingo, was supervised by the CAN national president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, represented by Rev (Dr) Mrs Uzoaku Williams.

Awoshiri, a Catholic priest and an academic, also promised to lead with openness and inclusivity, building bridges across denominational and interfaith lines.

“Our diversity should be our strength, not our division,” he stated.

Other elected executives include Rev Samuel Ibrahim Jatau (CCN) as vice chairman, Rev (Dr) Nelson Dunah (CPFN/PFN) as secretary, Rev Samaila Tsapta (TEKAN/ECWA) as assistant secretary, and Apostle Sunday Adetiba (OAIC) as treasurer.

CAN, the umbrella body of all Christian groups in Nigeria, plays a vital role in promoting interfaith dialogue, moral responsibility, and peaceful coexistence across the country.
