In a distressing cry for help, the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of Tertiary Hospitals in Nigeria has sounded the alarm over the crippling state of healthcare facilities in the country. Rising from their 106th regular meeting, the hospital administrators painted a dire picture of a sector overwhelmed by skyrocketing electricity tariffs, brain drain, inadequate funding, and exorbitant drug costs.

The committee’s pleas come as a desperate call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene swiftly and address the festering issues threatening the very fabric of Nigeria’s healthcare system. With hospitals struggling to stay afloat, the lives of millions hang in the balance. Will the President heed the call and rescue the nation’s healthcare from the brink of collapse?

The high electricity tariffs have led to disconnections and threats of disconnections of federal tertiary health institutions, affecting healthcare delivery. The brain drain has resulted in a significant shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, while inadequate funding limits the ability of healthcare facilities to provide quality healthcare services. The high cost of drugs and consumables makes it difficult for many Nigerians to access healthcare services, and unpaid debts to outsourced services companies affect the ability of healthcare facilities to procure essential services.

Despite these challenges, there are opportunities to improve the healthcare sector in Nigeria. Investing in alternative power supply solutions, encouraging public-private partnerships and international collaborations, and encouraging local production of essential medicines and consumables can help address the challenges facing the sector.

The Federal Government must take urgent action to address the challenges facing the healthcare sector. This includes increasing funding, improving working conditions, and encouraging local production of essential medicines and consumables. The government must also review electricity tariffs, implement new NHIA tariffs, review approval thresholds, encourage local production of drugs and consumables, and establish a tertiary healthcare development fund.

The healthcare sector in Nigeria is critical to the well-being of Nigerians, and it is essential that urgent action is taken to address the challenges facing the sector. By doing so, Nigeria can improve the health outcomes of its citizens and achieve its health development goals.

President Tinubu, the fate of Nigeria’s healthcare system rests on your shoulders. The cries of distress from the hospitals are deafening, and the time for action is now. The Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors has sounded the alarm, and it is imperative that you heed the call.

Convene an emergency meeting with these medical leaders to grasp the gravity of the situation. Establish a task force to probe the issues and propose solutions within a specific timeframe. Increase funding for the healthcare sector to improve quality and access to healthcare services.

Retain skilled healthcare professionals by improving working conditions and offering competitive remuneration. Encourage local production of essential medicines and consumables to reduce costs and improve availability. Review electricity tariffs to make them more affordable for healthcare facilities.

Implement new NHIA tariffs to improve the quality of services rendered to enrollees. Review approval thresholds to forestall challenges in implementing the 2024 capital budgets. Foster public-private partnerships and international collaborations to improve healthcare services. Establish a tertiary healthcare development fund to address funding gaps in the health sector.

Mr. President, the healthcare sector is on the brink of collapse. Millions of lives hang in the balance. Act swiftly and decisively to rescue the nation’s healthcare system. The future of Nigeria’s health and wellbeing depends on your prompt action.

In conclusion, President Tinubu, the fate of Nigeria’s healthcare system hangs precariously in the balance. The clarion call from the hospitals echoes through the corridors of power, pleading for urgent intervention. The time for action is now! The nation’s health and wellbeing teeter on the brink of collapse, and the consequences of inaction will be catastrophic.

Seize this moment, Mr. President, to etch your name in the annals of history as a champion of healthcare reform. Unleash a new era of quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare for all Nigerians. The people’s lives, hopes, and dreams depend on your swift and decisive action.

Rise to the challenge, Mr. President, and let the pulse of Nigeria’s healthcare system beat strong once more! The nation waits with bated breath for your bold response to this crisis. Act now, and let the future of Nigeria’s health shine bright!
