In a development that has taken the football world by surprise, Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi is reportedly in discussions with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli about a potential transfer later this year. If finalised, this move would reignite the long-standing rivalry between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently plies his trade for Al-Nassr.

Messi’s current deal with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami is set to run until December 2025; however, indications suggest that a contract renewal is unlikely at this stage. This uncertainty has opened the door for Messi’s exit from Miami as several clubs show keen interest in securing the services of the 38-year-old Argentine maestro.

According to French sports newspaper L’Equipe, Al-Ahli has been actively pursuing the former Barcelona star and has been working diligently for several weeks to persuade Messi to consider a sensational switch to Saudi Arabia. The interest from Al-Ahli comes on the back of the Saudi Pro League’s aggressive recruitment strategy, which has seen a host of international stars making the move to the Kingdom.

As football enthusiasts eagerly await updates on this potential transfer, the prospect of Messi and Ronaldo facing off in the same league again adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. Their previous encounters in Spanish football created moments that captivated fans worldwide, and a reunion in the Middle East could reignite those electrifying rivalries on the pitch.

Messi has previously expressed his enjoyment of his time in Miami since making the switch from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, and his impact on the MLS has been significant. Nevertheless, with his future now in limbo and interest from Al-Ahli escalating, it remains to be seen what steps the Argentine will take in the coming months.

Football fans across the globe will undoubtedly be watching closely, hoping for another chapter in the storied careers of two of the greatest players the game has ever seen.
