Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has been selected as one of the draw assistants for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification draw.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) organised ceremony will see the ex-Nigerian defensive stalwart share the stage with three other iconic figures from African football history. Troost-Ekong will be joined by Ivorian winger Max-Alain Gradel, Egyptian goalkeeping legend Essam El Hadary, and Congolese attacking great Trésor Mputu. Each of these players has left an indelible mark on African football, making the selection a fitting tribute to the continent’s rich sporting heritage.
According to an official statement from CAF, the draw ceremony is scheduled to take place at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA). Football fans across the globe will be able to watch the event live via CAF TV and various social media platforms, ensuring wide accessibility and engagement.
A total of 48 nations will participate in the qualifiers, including the three co-hosts of the 2027 finals: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. These host nations are automatically entered into the qualifying process, which will see all 48 teams drawn into 12 groups. From each group, the top two sides will advance to the final tournament.
The AFCON 2027 finals themselves are set to be played from 19 June to 17 July 2027. With the draw bringing together legends of the game and a competitive line-up of nations, anticipation is already building for what promises to be a thrilling road to the continental showpiece.
