A policeman on duty was on Wednesday crushed to death and another injured when a mixer truck lost control and crashed along the Sani Abacha Expressway by the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja.
The incident, which occurred at about 2:20pm on Wednesday, was confirmed in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the FCT police command, SP Josephine Adeh.
According to Adeh, “Preliminary investigation revealed that a mixer truck, driven by one Salman Usman of a construction company based in Wuse Zone 5, lost control and crashed at the location.
“In the incident, two police officers on official duty were affected, resulting in the unfortunate loss of one of the officers, while the other sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention.”
The police described the crash as a stark reminder of the daily risks faced by officers deployed to protect lives and ensure traffic management across the city.
Adeh noted that the driver of the vehicle has been taken into custody, while other vehicles involved in the accident have been recovered for further investigation and safety inspection.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, extended condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased officer, and offered prayers for the recovery of the injured personnel.
He assured residents that the investigation will be thorough and that justice will be served.
