Trump Vows Continued U.S. Military Presence Amid Iran Ceasefire

U.S. President Donald Trump has said American forces stationed around Iran will remain in place until what he described as a “real agreement” is fully achieved and honoured, as Washington navigates a delicate two-week ceasefire with Tehran.

The truce, reached on Tuesday, is already showing signs of strain. Israel has carried out fresh strikes in Lebanon, while the United States has pushed back on some of Iran’s conditions for ending the conflict ahead of upcoming negotiations.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that all U.S. military assets — including ships, aircraft, personnel, and additional weaponry — would stay deployed in and around Iran to ensure what he called the “destruction” of an already weakened adversary, until a final agreement is secured and implemented.

Although the president expressed confidence that a deal is likely, he warned that failure to reach one could trigger even more intense military action.

Meanwhile, Iran has agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire period, while asserting continued control over the crucial passage, which handles roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments.

In demands circulated through Iranian state media, Tehran also reiterated its stance on maintaining its uranium enrichment programme — a point not reflected in its official submission to the United Nations. Trump, however, insisted that Iran would not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, adding that the issue of enrichment would be addressed in any final deal.

Talks are expected to take place in Pakistan as both sides attempt to reach a lasting resolution.
