A member of House of Representatives representing Ideato North/South federal constituency of Imo State, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, has emerged as the spokesperson of opposition lawmakers coalition in the 10th National Assembly.
This was contained in a letter made available to journalists in Abuja dated March 22, 2024, signed by Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) Secretary General, Steering Committee, High Chief Peter Ameh, and addressed to Hon. Ugochinyere, who’s the Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream).
In the letter, the coalition charged Ugochinyere to revive the voice of the opposition in the parliament, saying that he was chosen due to his outstanding and sterling performance when he previously served as the Spokesperson for the CUPP.
The letter reads in part, “This is to convey to you, the decision of the Coalition of United Political Parties in Nigeria (CUPP) appointing you as the Spokesperson of the Nigerian Opposition Coalition Lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly.  This selection is sequel to your outstanding and sterling performance when you previously served as the Spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) before your election into the Parliament as Member Representing ideato North/South Federal Constituency by the people of ideato.
“The Nigerian Opposition Coalition is looking up to you to provide the needed voice for the Coalition of Opposition Parties in the Parliament and provide the needed unblemished image for the Coalition of Opposition Party Lawmakers in the Parliament, in conjunction with leading Members of the Grand Alliance.”
Reacting to his appointment, Hon. Ugochinyere said he’s honoured to be chosen by the coalition to be their mouthpiece, noting that opposition lawmakers are true ambassadors of the people, with a primary role of questioning government’s actions, for the good of the people.
He assured that the opposition in the 10th National Assembly will be revived to perform their unique role of scrutinising the policies and actions of the government for the general good of the citizens.
Ugochinyere said, “The nation is  beclouded by the menace of under-development. This has resulted to economic hardship and social miscarriages on the citizenry. The citizens are having a rough time, there is uncontrollable inflation, unemployment, and divestments.
“Also, there is a sharp decline in the purchasing power and value of the naira, it’s our job to scrutinize the policies and actions of the government for a better society. I assure you that I and my colleagues in the opposition will work towards ending impunity, for the advancement of democracy and development of the nation.”
