Ujiri Joins Toronto Tempo Ownership In Major Boost For Women’s Basketball

Renowned basketball executive Masai Ujiri has been unveiled as a Principal Owner of Toronto Tempo, in a landmark move that underlines the club’s ambition to help shape the future of women’s basketball globally.

Ujiri, widely credited as the architect behind the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 NBA Championship success, brings a wealth of leadership experience and a strong commitment to using sport as a tool for social change. Through his foundation, Giants of Africa, he has empowered thousands of young people across Africa, promoting education, inclusion and leadership development.

Speaking after his unveiling, Ujiri expressed pride in joining a project he believes will have a lasting global impact.

“As an honorary Canadian, I am delighted to join the Tempo ownership group. This is a franchise that represents not only Canada, but the future of basketball,” he said. “It is about building leaders, elevating women both on and off the court, and establishing a championship culture from the outset. This is more than a team — it is a defining moment for women’s basketball worldwide.”

A key pillar of that vision is Tempo Rising, a newly launched global coaching mentorship programme aimed at developing emerging women and non-binary coaches at the grassroots level. The initiative will provide mentorship, professional development opportunities and hands-on experience to help shape the next generation of leaders in the sport.

The programme will be led by Ujiri alongside General Manager Monica Wright Rogers and Head Coach Sandy Brondello, with a focus on long-term growth, community engagement and values-driven leadership.

Chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures, Larry Tanenbaum, welcomed Ujiri’s appointment, highlighting his alignment with the organisation’s vision.

Ujiri joins an ownership group that already includes tennis legend Serena Williams, further strengthening the franchise’s high-profile backing as it prepares to make its competitive debut.
