The management of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has summoned all students to a crucial, broad-based meeting to address rising security concerns and recent incidents within and around the institution.

It has declared a lecture-free period to ensure full participation.

The directive was contained in an internal memorandum with reference number UJ/VC/55, dated 29 July 2026, and signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, a copy of which was sighted by our correspondent.

The meeting is scheduled for Friday, 31 July 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the meeting became necessary in view of recent developments that threaten the university’s peace, security, and good reputation.

“In view of recent events that threaten the peace, security and good image of our University, I have approved the convening of a crucial meeting with all students of the University of Jos,” the memorandum stated.

Professor Ishaya said the meeting would focus on general security concerns within the university community, recent unhealthy activities involving students and measures to safeguard the well-being of all members of the institution.

“The primary objective of this meeting is to deliberate on general security concerns within the University community, recent unhealthy activities of students, and to chart a collective course of action to safeguard the well-being of all members of the University community,” the memorandum added.

To guarantee maximum attendance, the Vice-Chancellor directed all Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments to suspend lectures between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on Friday.

“Considering the significance of the meeting, all Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments are by this notice directed to declare a lecture-free period between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on the said date. “

This will ensure that all students attend and participate in the meeting,” the directive read.

The university stressed that attendance at the meeting is compulsory for all students.

The development comes amid heightened security concerns within the university community.

LEADERSHIP recalled that barely two weeks ago, panic gripped the University of Jos after the beheaded body of a farmer was discovered on a farmland within the institution’s Permanent Site.

University authorities confirmed that the victim was neither a student nor a member of staff but a farmer known to operate in the area. At the same time, security agencies commenced investigations into the gruesome killing.

The latest directive also comes in the wake of the alleged mob killing of Ibrahim Mbaya, a student and fast-rising Jos-based model, who died after he was allegedly tortured by a group of youths over accusations of stealing a mobile phone at an off-campus residence.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, with the Plateau State Police Command arresting suspects and launching an investigation into the killing.
