Concerned members of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association have formally rejected the federal government’s decision to rename their alma mater after the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement, the alumni described the renaming as abrupt and disrespectful to the university’s history.

The federal government had announced plans to rename the institution “Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri” in honour of the late former president.

However, alumni argue that the decision undermines the school’s 50-year heritage and identity.

“For half a century, UNIMAID has stood as a symbol of resilience and academic excellence in Nigeria’s northeast,” the statement read.

The group also criticised the lack of consultation with key stakeholders, including alumni, students, and local communities.

“Such a unilateral change disregards the principles of shared governance and academic autonomy,” they added.

While acknowledging Buhari’s national contributions, the association suggested alternative ways to honour him.

They proposed establishing a Muhammadu Buhari Centre for Leadership and Peace Studies or naming a building or scholarship scheme after him.

Alumni further warned that the rebranding could destabilise the university’s international partnerships and accreditation processes.

In their appeal, they urged the government to suspend the renaming process and initiate broad stakeholder consultations.

“We stand ready to participate in discussions that will protect UNIMAID’s identity while respectfully commemorating President Buhari’s legacy,” the statement said.
