Nigeria’s D’Tigress will enter the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup with confidence from a proud recent history but also a significant challenge ahead, as head coach Rena Wakama takes a largely inexperienced squad into a demanding Group B campaign.

Wakama selected a final 12-player squad in which only Ezinne Kalu and Promise Amukamara have previous World Cup experience. The pair featured at the 2018 tournament and will become the first Nigerian players to appear at two editions of the competition.

They will provide vital experience in a team otherwise dominated by debutants, with 10 of Wakama’s 12 players preparing to experience the tournament for the first time.

Captain Amy Okonkwo will lead the squad, alongside Amukamara, Jordan Obi, Elizabeth Balogun, Murjanatu Musa, Pallas Kunaiyi, Rita Igbokwe, Victoria Macaulay, Kalu, Shay Ijiwoye, Nicole Enabosi and Grace Efosa.

For the 10 players, however, the tournament represents an entirely new level of international basketball. That combination of experience and youth could prove both D’Tigress’ biggest strength and their greatest vulnerability.

Tough Group Awaits

Nigeria face a demanding Group B campaign, with France, Hungary and South Korea standing between D’Tigress and a place in the knockout rounds.

The African champions will begin against South Korea on Friday (today), before facing Hungary on Saturday and completing their group-stage campaign against France on Monday.

France represent the biggest challenge on paper. The European powerhouse bring considerable international and WNBA experience and have already demonstrated their quality against Nigeria, beating D’Tigress 93-86 in the World Cup qualifiers in Lyon.

South Korea could prove equally significant to Nigeria’s hopes. The opening encounter is widely viewed as a pivotal fixture, with the result potentially shaping the battle for the top positions in the group.
South Korea also bring considerable World Cup experience, having qualified for 17 consecutive editions of the tournament.

Hungary, meanwhile, return to the World Cup for the first time since 1998 and will be eager to make their comeback count, with Dorka Juhasz among the players expected to lead their challenge.

For Nigeria, the opening two games could therefore define their campaign. A victory over South Korea would provide an immediate boost and put D’Tigress in a strong position heading into their meeting with Hungary. Success in both games could potentially give Wakama’s side considerable breathing space before they face the formidable French.

Experience Could Prove Crucial

While Nigeria’s young squad offers athleticism and energy, the value of Kalu and Amukamara could become particularly important when matches enter decisive moments.

Their experience of the World Cup environment gives Wakama two players who understand the intensity, physicality and pressure associated with the global stage.

Veteran player and youth mentor Terfa Nor believes their presence could have a major influence beyond their contributions on the court.

“It’s not just about minutes played — it’s about the locker room,” Nor said. “In 2018, those two sat in huddles during timeouts and saw what it looked like when France or Australia turned up the heat. That lived experience is priceless.”

He added that the younger players could draw confidence from the pair when confronted by difficult moments.

Coach Chidi Okonkwo, a former assistant coach of Garki Hoopers, also acknowledged the difficulty of Nigeria’s group but believes the veterans can help the team handle the pressure.

“Let’s not romanticise this — Group B is a war zone,” Okonkwo said. “France are stacked with WNBA talent. South Korea have qualified 17 times running — they don’t panic. Hungary are the unknown quantity with nothing to lose.”

However, he believes Nigeria can still advance if they manage the opening fixtures effectively.

“Kalu and Amukamara didn’t come back to make up the numbers. They came back to prove that 2018 wasn’t a fluke,” he added.

Supporting Cast Must Deliver

Former professional point guard Reuben Tarzohor believes Nigeria’s prospects will also depend heavily on the performances of the players surrounding the two veterans.

He highlighted captain Amy Okonkwo’s scoring ability, Victoria Macaulay’s presence around the rim and Jordan Obi’s athleticism as important elements of the squad.

“My only worry is guard depth behind Kalu. If she picks up early fouls against France’s press, Shay Ijiwoye has to step up,” Tarzohor said.

“But I trust Wakama’s rotations. This squad is deeper than 2018. I’m saying quarter-finals again, minimum.”

That depth could prove decisive. A demanding three-match group schedule will require Wakama to rotate her players intelligently, particularly with Nigeria playing South Korea and Hungary on consecutive days.

The coach will also need to ensure the team’s inexperience does not become a liability. The World Cup offers little room for prolonged adjustment, and mistakes against highly organised opponents can quickly become costly.

2018 Legacy, 2026 Ambition

D’Tigress arrive in Germany carrying the memory of their landmark 2018 campaign, when Nigeria became the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the FIBA Women’s World Cup.

Six years later, the challenge is different. Nigeria are no longer an unknown quantity. They enter the tournament as African champions and with growing expectations to compete beyond the continental level.

That makes the role of Kalu and Amukamara even more significant. They are not returning simply to relive the achievements of 2018; they are expected to help guide a new generation towards creating its own history.

The road to the quarter-finals will be difficult, with France presenting a formidable obstacle and South Korea potentially holding the key to Nigeria’s progression.

But D’Tigress have a blend of experience, youth, athleticism and international pedigree capable of making Group B highly competitive.

For Nigeria, today’s meeting with South Korea is more than an opening fixture. It is the first test of whether this new generation can translate promise into results on the biggest stage.

In 2018, D’Tigress shocked the world by reaching the quarter-finals.

In Berlin, they have an opportunity to show that achievement was not a one-off — and that Nigerian women’s basketball has entered a new era in which competing with the world’s best is no longer an ambition, but an expectation.
