Nigeria’s U-20 team, Flying Eagles, began their campaign in Group A of the 2025 WAFU B U-20 Boys’ Cup with a spirited 1-1 draw against hosts Ghana in the opening match yesterday.

In a thrilling encounter, the Flying Eagles equalised with less than ten minutes remaining, as Abdulahi Abiodun found the back of the net, cancelling out an earlier goal from Ghana’s Musibau Aziz.

The regional tournament serves as vital preparation for the Flying Eagles ahead of the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Chile from 27 September to 19 October.

Ghana struck first in the 23rd minute when Aziz unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box, beating Flying Eagles goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt following a well-placed low cross from the right flank. The Flying Eagles responded positively, pressing for an equaliser, which they achieved in the 82nd minute when Abiodun headed home from a corner kick.

The Flying Eagles will play their next Group A match against the Benin Republic on Sunday, 13 July 2025.

In Group B, matches will commence today, with Côte d’Ivoire facing Burkina Faso and Niger Republic going head-to-head with Togo.
