Governor Alex Otti of Abia State said the state government introduced electric vehicles in the state to provide the residents cost-effective transportation and to protect the environment from pollution.
Otti explained this yesterday at the official commissioning of 20 additional electric buses the government acquired for its Green Shuttle Service fleet in Umuahia, the state capital.
He said the choice had positioned the state ahead of emerging global transportation trends driven by clean energy and technological innovation.
”Transportation is the oil that lubricates the wheels of prosperity. It moves people, drives commerce and expands the frontiers of opportunity.
”The progress of any civilisation ultimately depends on how its transport system evolves to meet the realities of the time,” the governor stated.
He announced the extension of operational hours of the State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency and other traffic enforcement authorities to 10: pm daily, including weekends.
While assuring of the commitment of his administration to deliver quality services, he said the buses are equipped with larger cargo compartments and facilities for persons living with disabilities.
Otti, who appealed to the residents to fulfill their tax obligations, noted that sustainable development depends on citizens partnering with government through responsible tax compliance.
The governor assured transport operators in the state that the government remains open to constructive dialogue, following reports of concerns from some informal transport operators.
Earlier in his speech, the commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, described the event as a celebration of visionary leadership and transformational governance.
Ukaegbu said the initiative demonstrates government’s commitment to sustainable development through investment in infrastructure, maintenance systems, and route planning.
He urged the residents to protect public assets and encouraged drivers and operators to uphold professionalism, discipline and strict compliance with road safety regulations.
