The chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, Hon Dennis Guwor, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening inter-state legislative cooperation in the country.

Guwor made the pledge in Asaba while receiving members of the Anambra State House of Assembly (ASHA), who are in Asaba for a three-day legislative retreat to deepen knowledge sharing and institutional collaboration.

Welcoming the lawmakers, the speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly (DSHA), noted that interactions among state legislatures remain vital in promoting best legislative practices, strengthening democratic institutions, and ensuring that lawmakers effectively represent the interests of their constituents.

“Legislative retreats such as this provide a valuable opportunity for lawmakers to exchange ideas, learn from one another and develop strategies that will ultimately improve governance in our various states,” Guwor said.

The speaker emphasised that Delta and Anambra states share not only geographical proximity but also strong historical, social and economic ties that continue to foster cooperation between the two states.

“Delta and Anambra are not just neighbours sharing common boundaries; we also share deep historical affiliations and vibrant economic relationships. These bonds make collaboration between our legislative institutions even more important,” he said.

Guwor, accompanied by principal officers and some members of DSHA, assured the visiting lawmakers of the Assembly’s readiness to sustain cooperation with other state legislatures across Nigeria.

He further invited the Anambra lawmakers to observe the plenary session of the Delta State House of Assembly as part of activities lined up for their visit.

“We are pleased to host you in Delta State, and we look forward to continued collaboration that will strengthen legislative processes and improve service delivery to our people,” Guwor added.

The speaker of ASHA, Hon Somtochukwu Udeze, who was recently elected vice chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, South-East Zone, expressed gratitude to the Delta State speaker and his team for their hospitality and solidarity.

The retreat is expected to feature sessions on legislative procedures, governance strategies and peer-learning interactions to equip the Anambra lawmakers with improved skills for effective lawmaking and oversight.
