Amina Hassan, the wife of the slain Vice Principal of Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, Danko-Wasagu local government area of Kebbi State, has recounted the terrifying moments leading up to her husband’s death during the bandit attack on the school in the hours of Monday, November 17, 2025.

The attack, which led to the abduction of 25 female students, also claimed the life of the school’s vice principal, Mallam Hassan Yakubu, who was reportedly attempting to shield the girls when he was killed. The incident has plunged the school and wider community into mourning, with families still anxiously awaiting updates on the missing students.

Amina described the morning as one that began like any other until sudden gunshots and frantic movement outside shattered the peace. She said she had stepped outside their home after sensing unusual activity, only to be confronted by a terrifying sight of armed men moving toward the house.

Startled and unprepared, she immediately turned back. “When I went outside, I saw them with guns and turned around and went back into the house,” she said. “I wasn’t wearing any scarf or slippers. I was crying and I told the girls to go inside and hide, that I would go back out.:

According to her, the students pleaded desperately with her not to step outside, urging her to stay hidden as the attackers drew closer. “They pleaded with me, saying if I come out, the bandits would kill me,” she said.

By then, the house was fully encircled. “They surrounded the whole house, making movements with their guns,” she recounted, adding that it was during this tense standoff that her husband, Mallam Hassan Yakubu, confronted the gunmen. “That’s when they killed him while he was trying to shield them,” she said, her voice breaking as she relived the moment.

The brutal killing of the vice principal and abduction of students have further fuelled anger and fear across the state, with many calling for stronger protection for schools, teachers, and students. The community described Yakubu as a dedicated educator who consistently put the welfare of his students first, a commitment that ultimately cost him his life.

Local authorities have since launched a coordinated search operation, while families remained hopeful for the safe return of the abducted girls. The attack has once again highlighted the vulnerability of schools in rural communities and intensified calls for urgent reforms in the nation’s security architecture.
