Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed gratitude to residents affected by ongoing road construction in Abuja, acknowledging their sacrifices – including the loss of ancestral homes – for the city’s development.

Wike spoke yesterday during the inauguration of the newly completed Arterial Road N5, stretching from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road Three.

He admitted that while some residents initially resisted the project, they later understood the necessity of urban development despite its challenges.

“Let me thank all other people, particularly the residents here, who initially were a problem but came to understand that development in a city has its own challenges.

“When people say we want to live in the capital, there are problems associated with it. You will lose certain things, including your traditional homes,” he said.

The minister said monetary compensation could never truly replace what was lost.

“Whatever was paid cannot be enough to compensate you for losing your ancestral homes. So, we sincerely thank you for your understanding,” he added.

The newly inaugurated road is expected to ease traffic congestion in key areas, including Dape, Gwarimpa, Kado, Karsana, Idu, and Dambora, with future extensions planned toward the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Beyond the FCT project, Wike also took a moment to appreciate political allies from Rivers, Enugu, Abia, and Sokoto states, crediting them for strengthening his leadership.

“Mr. President, these guys are worthy of commendation; they have done very well. A man is strong because of the people surrounding him. If I come out alone, you’d say, ‘Forget it.’ But I don’t think anyone can say there’s no hope for Rivers State. I don’t see that person, that is the truth,” he said.

The event highlighted both infrastructure progress and the human cost of urban development, with Wike assuring continued efforts to improve Abuja while recognising residents’ sacrifices.
