As the world marks this year’s  International Women’s Day, women in various areas of endeavour in Abia State  have reflected on the occasion, pressing for more women-friendly reforms.

They spoke to LEADERSHIP Weekend on their rights, equality, healthcare, dignity, inclusivity and empowerment as well as injustice, political bias, gender-based violence and inequality against them in Umuahia, the state capital.

According to them, the theme of the occasion, which is; “All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” is very timely as it strikes the core of their challenges in the society.

The state commissioner for women affairs, Maureen Ahukwa, said the occasion highlighted the critical roles women play in society.

She added that it also supports advocacy for women’s voice to be heard and to ensure their rights, privileges and dignity are protected.

She expressed concern that despite their immense contributions and sacrifices to society, women had continued to face barriers in many areas of life.

Contributing, a political activist and gender advocate, Clarion Eze, asserted that women are “seriously marginalised in elective positions and political appointments.”

“A very good example is the state House of Assembly where the 24 seats are all occupied by men. So, we matter here only when it is time for casting of ballot,” she lamented.

On her part, a secondary school teacher, Ngozika Agwu, advocated for “a strong campaign against gender-based violence, negative beliefs, traditions, and situations that keep us under bondage.”

In a remark, a fashion designer, Stacy Dike, noted that governments and society had only been paying lip service to challenges facing the womenfolk.

She underlined the need for justice, equality, skills acquisition and empowerment, employment opportunities and free healthcare services for vulnerable and elderly women.
