At least five teachers from Ughelli South local government area of Delta State, who were returning from the celebration of World Teachers Day (WTD) in Asaba, were injured following a road accident.
The accident occurred along the Ughelli-Asaba expressway on Sunday while going back to Ughelli.
It was learnt that the bus conveying the about 10 teachers had a head-on collision with a moving truck at Akiewhe in Isoko North local government area close to Emevor.
Some of the teachers suffered fractures on their legs and hands while others sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently in critical health condition at a hospital.
“The truck driver veered off his lane when the bus was already close. He attempted to overtake. The truck driver turned his steering towards the bus and a major collision occured.
“There were about 10 teachers in the bus driven also by a teacher. The accident was serious that rescuers could not pull out victims from the bus. It was axe they used to smash the body of the bus before they could pull the victims out.
“Five teachers had very severe injuries including the Secretary of the NUT, Ughelli South LGA chapter, the Vice Chairman and others. The teachers were rushed to the Central Hospital Ughelli,” a source narrated.
The Commissioner for Secondary Education, Rose Ezewu, has visited the hospital to get first-hand information and to also sympathise with the victims.
As at press time, family members, colleagues of the victims were still visiting the hospital to sympathise with those involved while the accident has continued to send a shockwave among teachers in the local government area.
