Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema, was sworn in for a second term on Tuesday, as his main opposition rival and runner-up in last month’s presidential election remains in custody on treason charges.

The August 13 election was overshadowed by allegations of intimidation, pro-government bias and restrictions on opposition activities, raising concerns about Zambia’s democratic reputation.

Thousands of supporters wearing the red colours of Hichilema’s United Party for National Development (UPND) gathered at a stadium in Lusaka for the inauguration, which was attended by several African leaders.

The 64-year-old businessman secured 60 per cent of the vote, while former government minister Brian Mundubile came second with 38 per cent, according to official results.

Mundubile went into hiding after security forces raided his home on August 14, saying they were searching for a suspected militia allegedly posing a threat to national security. His NRPUP alliance rejected the allegations.

A former cabinet minister was killed during the operation, while 11 members of Mundubile’s camp were arrested.

Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, surrendered to police nearly two weeks later. Their lawyer confirmed at the weekend that both men had been charged with treason, allegations they have denied.

Despite the controversy surrounding the election and the opposition crackdown, Hichilema has been credited with helping to steer Zambia through a significant economic turnaround during his first term, which began in 2021.
