The Zamfara State House of Assembly has issued a stern two-week ultimatum to Governor Dauda Lawal Dare, warning of potential impeachment over worsening insecurity and alleged financial mismanagement.
Lawmakers raised the alarm during plenary on what they described as the administration’s failure to safeguard lives and property across the state.
They cited the rising incidents of killings, kidnappings, and armed banditry, accusing the governor of being slow and ineffective in addressing the crisis.
“We will no longer remain silent while our people live under constant threat,” a legislator declared during the session.
The Assembly said it would not hesitate to invoke its constitutional powers should the executive fail to take immediate and decisive action.
In addition to the security concerns, the lawmakers questioned the utilisation of ₦9 billion reportedly spent on hospital renovations.
They argued that despite the expenditure, many healthcare facilities remain dilapidated and inaccessible, especially in rural communities.
“Zamfara’s hospitals are in ruins,” another member stated. “We demand a detailed breakdown of how the funds were used.”
The governor’s widely publicised empowerment programme also came under fire.
The initiative, which claimed to provide ₦250,000 grants to individuals to start small businesses, was labelled a “ghost scheme” by lawmakers.
They challenged the administration to publish a transparent list of beneficiaries, sorted by local governments and wards.
Further criticisms emerged over the appointment of non-indigenes as Special Advisers to the governor.
Legislators described the move as “insensitive,” alleging that millions in state resources were being handed to outsiders while qualified Zamfara indigenes were ignored.
“How can a government claim to empower its people while sidelining them in appointments?” one lawmaker asked.
The House reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and insisted that it would use every legal means to protect the interests of the people.
